Things to consider before adopting a parrot:

Remember, before you adopt any pet tomake sure you research the species and its special needs. Below is a general list of questions to ask yourself. If you can’t answer yes to every question, a parrot may not be the best pet for your current lifestyle.

  • Parrots are social animals. Will you have time to play with your bird? Can you let your pet out of its cage? Will you be able to place your bird's cage in a place where they can be included in family activities?
  • Parrots have a specialized diet. Can you provide a variety of nuts, fruits and pellets?
  • Parrots are curious and destructive. Can you provide a safe environment in whcih your parrot can play? Can you provide a variety of objects they can safely destroy?
  • Parrots have a very long lifespan. Can you ensure that your parrot will be well taken care of, even if it outlives you?
  • Parrots have a strong beak. They can bite when they are scared or angry. They can also easily destroy woodwork, furniture and fabrics.
  • Parrots need their own veterinarian. Do you have an avian vet in your area?
  • Parrots are expensive to care for. Can you afford cages, food, toys and vet care?
